Overview
GymAssist is a gym program planner and workout tracker driven by the user. You choose the program length, workouts per week, the days, and the exercises, sets, reps, and target weights — the app never generates a plan for you or overrides yours.
The research
The feature set came out of market research into what lifters actually want from a tracking app: fast logging, last time's numbers visible while logging, a reliable rest timer, never losing data, decimal weights, offline use, and no paywalls or ads.
What it does
- Programs — rotating days (A/B/A, B/A/B…) with progress worked out from finished workouts, so a missed gym day never throws the plan out
- Logging — today's session pre-filled from the plan, last time's numbers on every set (tap to copy them in), decimal weights, and every keystroke saved to the device straight away
- Rest timer — starts when you tick a set, stays accurate in the background, and fires a notification and vibration when rest is over
- History — every workout, plus per-exercise history with PRs (heaviest, estimated 1RM, most reps)
- Exercise library — 37 starter exercises plus your own
- Data — offline, with CSV export and full JSON backup and restore
How it's built
React Native with Expo and TypeScript, Expo Router, and SQLite with versioned migrations. The core logic — rest timer, program progress, and backups — is covered by unit tests.
Status
The MVP is done and verified on an Android emulator, and a signed 1.0.0 release APK has been built and tested. Next up: real app icon and splash art, then features like set types, RPE, and progress charts.
