RealCosts
A browser extension that shows what things actually cost you — in hours of your life, not just dollars.
- Role
- Designer / Developer
- Year
- 2026
- Focus
- Browser Extension, JavaScript, Manifest V3, Chrome / Firefox
Overview
RealCosts reframes prices as time. Set your hourly wage once, then hover any
price on any page to see it outlined with a floating badge next to it:
≈ 4.5 Hours of Work.
What it does
- Finds every price — plain price text and prices split across separate elements, whether that's one price on a product page or dozens on a listing page
- Hover the whole product — the hover area grows to cover the entire product card, image and title included, so on a listing page hovering anywhere on a tile shows its badge
- Never touches the page's design — the badge floats outside the site's own layout and follows the price as you scroll
- Keeps up with dynamic pages — infinite scroll, single-page navigation, and price updates are picked up as they happen
- Settings — an hourly rate or a salary calculator, hours-and-minutes or decimal display, currency symbol, and a minimum price so pocket change doesn't get badged, all synced across your devices
How it's built
A Manifest V3 extension in plain JavaScript that runs on both Chrome and Firefox from the same manifest, with no background script.
Status
Version 1 runs on desktop browsers. Next on the roadmap: per-site allow and block lists, multiple currencies at once, and a phone app that reuses the same wage-conversion logic.
